A team of Year 9s (Jemma Brisk, Cerys Poore and Kate Powell) qualified for the Tournament of Champions in an academic competition called the World Scholar's Cup. They qualified after winning the Wellington round in May and coming 8th in the global round in Cape Town in August. The competition involves debating, essay writing and scholastic exams. Our team was the only junior New Zealand team to qualify for Yale, and they competed against 399 other teams (1200 competitors in all) from 50 countries. They won two silver medals in the team events - for debating and the scholastic exam. In addition, Jemma won a gold medal and Kate won a silver medal for their individual performances in debating. Jemma also won a silver medal for her results in the history exam. Jemma was our best placed student, and was placed 201st out of 1,200 students. In total our team won 7 medals - 2 gold and 5 silver. The team showcased New Zealand at the Cultural Fair. Jemma dressed as a wahine, Cerys as an All Black and Kate as an America's Cup sailor. An awesome result against outstanding competition from around the globe; and a wonderful experience for the girls.
