Student Council Selection

The selection process of student councillors will take place over 2 sessions, this is sufficient for students who are keen to represent their Hui Ako to signal their interest, prepare, write and present their speech to their peers and give them time to vote.

Step 1: Ako teacher speaks to class

Students are spoken to about the importance of the student council as a pathway for student voice and a way to develop leadership skills that are valued in the workplace , their future places of study and training and the  wider community. It is about always looking for ways we can do better in our school, community and beyond.

Step 2: Signaling Interest

  1. Students, in each Hui Ako,  interested in being a part of the council will signal interest to their Hui Ako teacher – where he/she will register the student’s name. The next Hui Ako these students come up with a speech to their Ako Group on why they should be elected.
  2. Senior Hui Ako classes should have 2 year levels represented.

Step 3: Speeches and voting

  1. Each candidate will perform their speech and or campaign to classmates. At this time, students will have to listen and consider what each candidate says, as the speeches should be the basis on voting for their preferred candidate.
  2. The Hui Ako Teacher will hand out each student a strip of paper containing the following fields:
    1. Name of Candidate Preferred
    2. Hui Ako
    3. Date (DD/MM)
  3. After students have voted, in confidence, the Hui Ako Teacher will collect and count up the Voting Forms.
  4. The student council trustee for each Hui Ako must be written into the google document called Student Council 20XX.
